The Broadnax Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 as a memorial to
Paul's mother, Ellastine Broadnax, soprano soloist and eminent voice teacher in Boston, Massachusetts.
Broadnax Scholarship Fund [BSF] is a family instituted, single donor charitable organization, administered by a full Board of Directors, with funds on deposit at
OneUnited Bank and Citizen's Bank. BSF is registered as a non-profit organization with the State and Federal governments, has tax-free classification, and will accept matching funds from your employer.
"Mrs. B.", as she was called, opened the Broadnax Studio in her home in the early 30's. She remained active as a vocal coach and music teacher for the next fifty years. Always involved with music and young people, she coached vocalists, pianists, church choirs and choral groups. Teenagers were trained not only to sing, read music and play instruments, but also harmony and solfeggio. She prepared them to perform professionally on stage and radio, in concerts and recitals.
The Roland Hayes School of music is a Boston Public School located in Roxbury, Massachusetts on the campus of the Madison Park/John D. O'Bryant High Schools. Here, the BSF
Board finds many talented music students from whom to select potential
recipients for the awards. In 1988, Mr. Robert Winfrey, Founder of
Roland Hayes School, facilitated an ongoing program for BSF; an annual
competition. As of December 2005, BSF has presented well over fifty Achievement
Awards of five hundred dollars each to students who have demonstrated academic
and/or musical achievement.
Our members donate not only financial support, but generous musical gifts as well. Nearly a thousand LP and 78 recordings of operas, spirituals, symphonies, Jazz, Broadway, Country, and Pop music have been contributed to the Ellastine Broadnax Music Library, as well as hundreds of books and magazines, containing years of researchable material about music, some dating back to the 18th century.
BSF has presented several boxes of sheet music for choral groups as well as for vocal soloists, from the collection of Mrs. Broadnax' former Music Studio. A CD player and several CDs, series tickets for concerts in Boston, subscriptions to many supportive periodicals, have been purchased with donations. In 1995, we received a like-new baritone horn from an interested member,
which was presented to a member of the All City Band.
These are just some of the things we have been able to do over the years. We hope that you will want to join us by becoming a donor/member.
